Unique
Inns Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Milestone Commemorated with Gala Celebration
and the Induction of Four New Member Inns
PORTLAND,
Ore. (Dec. 6, 2007) – Unique Inns, one of North America’s first
bed and breakfast innkeeping organizations, recently celebrated
its 25th Anniversary at the organization’s semi-annual meeting
in Jacksonville, Ore. Hosted by Jerry and Linda Evans, founding
members and proprietors of the historic Jacksonville Inn, the
three-day event was highlighted by a gala dinner during which
innkeepers gathered with Executive Director Rose Allen to share
stories about the past quarter-century and toast the group’s
success with a bottle of 1982 Port, which was bottled the year
the organization began. Four of the organization’s original
11 inns are still Unique Inns’ members.
Other
founding members recognized for 25 years with Unique Inns were
David Campiche and Laurie Anderson from the Shelburne Inn in
Seaview, Wash.; Dirk and Laurie Van Zante, owner of the Tu Tu'
Tun Lodge in Gold Beach, Ore.; and Sharon and Jim Van Loan,
proprietors of the Steamboat Inn in Steamboat, Ore.
“For
25 years, our purpose has been to promote member inns to the
public, serve as an internal referral network for each other,
and provide a forum for exchanging ideas and information related
to the innkeeping business,” said Rose Allen. “This celebration,
and our growing number of members, signifies that we have been
successful in driving business to our members’ properties, and
making a positive impact on the lives of our innkeepers.”
In addition to celebration dinners and special award presentations,
business meetings resulted in the voting in of four new inns.
They include Tom and Darcy Tunt of 1801 First in Napa, Calif.;
Rock and Kathleen Gosselin and Carl Lambert of The Avalon Hotel
on Catalina Island, Calif.; Paul Mackay of The Inn at El Gaucho
in Seattle, Wash.; and Bernard and Lynne Butcher of Tallman
Hotel in Upper Lake, Calif. These new inns are currently being
added to the Unique Inns’ Web site (www.uniqueinns.com), and
will be included in the 25th Anniversary Edition of the group’s
printed directory of locations scheduled for release in early
2008.
Looking forward, Allen said the group agreed to expand their
geographic reach beyond California, Oregon, Washington and British
Columbia, and will now consider potential new members located
in Idaho, Montana and Alaska.
About Unique Inns
Established in 1982, Unique Inns is one of North America’s first
bed and breakfast innkeeping organizations. The non-profit fraternal
organization was originally formed by 11 innkeepers in Oregon
and Washington, and now includes approximately 45 members throughout
British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California.
Members are selected based on the inn’s one-of-a-kind location,
style and guest experiences; each inn must operate in the upscale
or luxury segment of the industry.
Every member inn is operated by experienced innkeepers, who
are committed to providing guests with genuine hospitality,
generous amenities, and world-class accommodations. Innkeepers
also specialize in providing off-the-beaten-path travel experiences.
From customized fine dining and wine-tasting events to shopping,
wilderness adventure and some of the most spectacular sightseeing
tours in the world, Unique Inns’ members are experts at packaging
their best regional offerings to create memorable travel experiences.
Members of Unique Inns actively participate in the vibrant and
varied food scenes sweeping North America. Most have received
recognition in the categories of travel, dining, and wine collections,
and several are recipients of Wine Spectator awards, including
the Carter House who received the magazine’s prestigious Grand
Award. Members are also involved in the global Slow Food Movement,
a non-profit educational organization dedicated to supporting
and celebrating the food traditions of North America through
programs and activities dedicated to taste education, defending
biodiversity and building food communities.
Allen’s responsibilities include working with the board of directors
and officers to set organizational goals, budgets and long-term
strategic direction, as well as growing the group’s membership.
Allen has served in this position since 1988.

table lamps and birch tree lamps (complete with birdhouses)
light the sitting area and fireplace. Fishing nets and rods
hang on display near the spa tub for two. An antique mountaineer’s
backpack and a watercolor of aspens with their spring foliage
complete the rugged décor. Patio doors open to a semi-private
deck with a view of the forested countryside.
For
guests looking for an experience more on the “wild side,” perhaps
the choice should be the Inn’s Safari Room. Yards of mosquito
netting drape the king-size bed. A giraffe peers out from the
floor-to-ceiling Serengeti mural; and African drums beckon for
a beat from a corner of the room. Antique leather traveling
cases stack to form end tables and bronze teller windows cage
the feline-predator paintings hanging over the fireplace and
tropical print easy chairs. A spa tub for two is also included
in this room for the “Wild at Heart.” Reservations can be made

service echoes that of the Slow Foods Movement, an association
in which Owners Blank and Francois Leclair are members.
Two beaches are within a few minutes walk of the inn: Victoria
Beach offering white sand, and Moss Point with tide pools and
coves. Just 1.5 miles south of Main Beach, this luxury hotel
is a short distance from the many boutiques, pottery shops,
and galleries for which Laguna Beach is famous.

Unique
Inns’ Member Awarded Top Honors - By Travel + Leisure Readers
Oregon’s
Tu Tu′ Tun Lodge Named Top Hotel in U.S. and Canada
PORTLAND,
Ore. (July 12, 2007) -- Tu Tu' Tun Lodge (pronounced too too′
tun) in Gold Beach, Ore., a member of Unique Inns, has been named
the top hotel in the continental U.S. and Canada in Travel + Leisure’s
World’s Best Awards 2007 readers’ survey. The
18-room lodge, described by the publication as an “Asian-influenced
Mission-style lodge on the Rogue River's banks,” reflects a
trend in global influences seen in several of this year’s top-ranked
hotels, according to Nancy Novogrod, editor-in-chief of Travel
+ Leisure. “This year's results underline T+L readers' ever-increasing
embrace of global travel in their search for distinctive and
authentic experiences.”
In
addition to receiving top honors among hotels in the U.S. and
Canada, the lodge was also recognized by readers for being among
the best in the following categories: hotels with nightly rates
at $250 and less (#2), Small Hotels (#12) and Top 100 Hotels
Overall (#17).
According
to Rose Allen, executive director of Unique Inns, Tu Tu' Tun
Lodge is representative of the variety of destinations and one-of-a-kind
experiences that guests of Unique Inns have come to expect.
“We
are so proud of the owners, Dirk and Laurie Van Zante, and the
well-deserved recognition given to Tu Tu' Tun Lodge,” said Allen.
All Unique Inns locations, whether in remote destinations or
more mainstream markets, offer memorable experiences that can’t
be found anywhere else. Our members pride themselves on giving
guests personalized, genuine experiences with each stay.”
Built
in tranquil woodlands along the north bank of the Rogue River,
Tu Tu' Tun Lodge’s contemporary cedar-planked main lodge houses
a handsome timbered lounge, cozy bar, and dining room. Many
of the luxurious guest rooms offer king beds, wood-burning fireplaces,
and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the river. The
property is named after a native tribe that lived along the
river banks. The land was an encampment for the area's first
inhabitants, the Tu Tu' Tunne Rogue Native Americans.
In
addition to Tu Tu' Tun Lodge, Unique Inns has nearly 40 member
inns in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California.
