Muir Beach, California
Just beyond San Francisco's Golden Gate is California's "bit of England." Rising in the midst of a valley near hidden Muir Beach, is the semi-timbered Pelican Inn, which feels centuries' old with its slate roof, roaring fireplace, 17th century antiques, and lead-glass windows.
Proprietors Ed and Susan Cunningham assure that the Inn's English traditions thrive. Each of their accommodations is unique and nothing is square, providing surprising authenticity. The pub offers traditional British-fare such as prime rib with Yorkshire pudding. Green Gulf Farm & Zen Center with it meditation garden is a short walk, as is Muir Beach, where Sir Francis Drake came ashore 400 years ago.

Innkeepers: Will Koza
In The PressI still covet weekend getaways there in one of its seven antique-filled rooms, enjoying a game of darts in the pub, roast-beef-and-Yorkshire-pudding dinners by an enormous fireplace in the dining room, then a cozy night in a canopy bed. — New York Times
