Pelican Inn

Muir Beach, California

Just beyond San Francisco's Golden Gate is California's "bit of England." Rising in the midst of a valley near hidden Muir Beach, is the semi-timbered Pelican Inn, which feels centuries' old with its slate roof, roaring fireplace, 17th century antiques, and lead-glass windows.

Proprietors Ed and Susan Cunningham assure that the Inn's English traditions thrive. Each of their accommodations is unique and nothing is square, providing surprising authenticity. The pub offers traditional British-fare such as prime rib with Yorkshire pudding. Green Gulf Farm & Zen Center with it meditation garden is a short walk, as is Muir Beach, where Sir Francis Drake came ashore 400 years ago.

This slate-roofed hideaway is so saturated in British hostelry tradition that in each of the seven guest rooms a tiny stone with a hole hangs over the bed to ward off witches and rickets. — Los Angeles Magazine
